Breaking Down USA World Cup Odds and Fixtures in Group of Death
The Americans were solid in World Cup qualifying, but were a little deflated when the draw came out and they were put in the Group of Death. The USA not only has long shot odds to win the World Cup at +15000, but have the third worst odds to win Group G at +1100.
The betting odds have changed a bit since they first came out, when the Americans had the worst odds to win the Group. However, they are only ahead of a Ghana side that has knocked the USA out of the last two World Cups. In the 2002 World Cup the Yanks lost a controversial 1-0 match to Germany in the quarterfinals, but they did beat Portugal in the group stage.
The USA has a good squad with depth, but they still lack true world-class players. On top of that they have not looked good in their friendlies so far leading up to the World Cup.
The first match the Americans play this summer is facing Ghana and maybe the third time in the charm. Head coach Jurgen Klinsmann stated, "After two losses, it's about time to beat them I guess." Easier said than done against a Ghana team that looked good in WC qualifying. However, the African side has not looked impressive in their two friendly matches after qualifying for Brazil in draws against the less than powerful teams of Libya and Montenegro.
In the next match the Americans face Cristiano Ronaldo and Portugal. The Yanks match up pretty well with Portugal, but can they contain Ronaldo? That is the big question for the match. One thing that USA has going for them is that the match is being held in Manaus, which is in the Amazon rainforest and the conditions of wet and muggy may slow Ronaldo down.
The first two matches are, obviously, key, as they face Germany in the last match. The Americans will have to play a near perfect match to beat Germany and may have to do so just to take away any points. Germany is a squad that has no glairing weaknesses and they have the best betting odds, third best overall, of any squad outside of South America.
