Can England End World Cup Woes? Sportsbook Odds Say No

England is seen as one of the best soccer nations in the world and the Premier League may be THE best league in the world. However, England has not made much noise in the World Cup since they won as the host in 1966 and odds makers are not giving them much of a chance in Brazil.

England has not made it past the quarterfinals since they finished in fourth place back in 1990. In the history of the World Cup England has only made it past the quarterfinals two times in 1990 and when they won in 1966.

There are high hopes for England in Brazil next summer, as they have a good squad with the likes of Steven Gerrard, Wayne Rooney, Daniel Sturridge and Danny Welbeck. Still, Bet365 has the Four Lions with the 12th best odds to win the World Cup at +3300.

England has a tall task in this World Cup just to make it out of their group. They are not in the Group of Death, but are in the second toughest group along with Italy, Uruguay, who both have better overall odds to win the World Cup, and Costa Rica. In group betting Uruguay and Italy have odds of +163 to advance out of the group with England at +225 and Costa Rica as the major long shot at +5000.

England has had problems in the World Cup when they face elite teams. That can be seen in their last four World Cups, as they have advanced past the group stage every time, but lost in the round of 16 twice and in the quarterfinals twice.

The Four Lions have a good squad this time around, but can they perform when it counts in the knockout stage? Odds makers do not think so, but we shall see this summer.
