Papua New Guinea 2 : 1 Tahiti Final
Chile - Odds to Win 2014 FIFA World Cup
Since Jorge Sampaoli took over as the head coach for Chile they went from a team that was a dark horse to qualify for Brazil, but are now a dark horse to win the World Cup. They ended qualifying en fuego and while they are in a hot team they are also in a tough group. Group B does have one of the weaker teams in Australia, but also the two teams that played in the final of the 2010 World Cup in Holland and Spain.
Chile has some star players, a great counter attack, and plays great possession soccer, but their defense is a concern. Still, they beat England in a friendly at Wembley in mid November and you can be sure that Holland and Spain were not happy to have Chile drawn into their group.
Chile Odds to win World Cup 2014: +4000
Chile Odds to win Group B: +400
How They Advanced:
Chile looked down and out early losing their first four qualifying matches, but they did not lose again and finished third in CONMEBOL. In their last six qualifying matches they won five and played to one draw. In that span they beat Ecuador and played to a great 3-3 draw at Colombia.
Chile’s offense caught fire in their six match unbeaten streak scoring 15 goals. The defense is the weakness for the Chilean squad, but in their last six matches they had two clean sheets and only conceded more than one goal in one game.
OK, so Chile is a hot team heading to Brazil, but their strengths may not be that strong against Holland and Spain. Their counter attack is great, but the Dutch and Spanish are two teams that do not make many mistakes. Also, the time of possession game, which is another strength of the squad, may be outmatched by Holland and Spain. Group B will play out just like the odds say, as Spain will win, Holland will advance, but Chile and Australia will not.
