Does Team USA Have a Chance in Brazil?

The Americans finished first in their World Cup qualifying and have high hopes for Brazil, but they do not have good odds to win it or even to get out of their group. That is because they are in the dreaded Group of Death along with Germany, Portugal, and a Ghana squad that beat them in the round of 16 in 2010.

USA has long shot odds of +15000 to win the World Cup of and the lowest odds to make it out of their group at +1200.

The defense for the American squad is a concern and in the last 24 years in World Cup competition they only have two clean sheets. They only have two defenders that are starting in major European clubs in Geoff Cameron and Fabian Johnson and the right back and left back are concerns with no clear cut starter.

Omar Gonzalez from the L.A. Galaxy may be called to be the central defense and while he is solid he did not play great facing solid competition last year. He faced eight teams in 2013 that will be playing in Brazil and in six of those matches the Americans were outshot.

DaMarcus Beasley captained the USA squad in the Gold Cup, but will be 32 when the World Cup begins and his best days may be behind him.

The USA defense will have to play well in this World Cup in the group stage facing Germany as well as Christian Ronaldo and Portugal.

Team USA have qualified for the World Cup for the seventh straight time, but have advanced past the round of 16 just once back in 2002 when they reached the quarterfinals. Odds makers are not giving them much of a shot to even make it out of the group, which would be a major accomplishment for Jurgen Klinsmann’s squad.
