Ecuador - Odds to Win 2014 FIFA World Cup
Ecuador is playing on their home continent, but only have the third best odds to make it out of their group. They were great at home in the qualifying process, but can they translate that to wins in Brazil? The tragic death of striker Chucho Benitez rocked the squad that has a solid midfield, but they are not an organized team and that may hurt them in the group stage.
Ecuador is in Group E along with a surprising first-pot team Switzerland and France, who narrowly missed qualifying and has a ton of pressure in this World Cup, but has a slew of star players. They have to play an up-tempo and intense styles of play and if they do not they tend to struggle big time.
Ecuador Odds to win World Cup 2014: +12500
Ecuador Odds to win Group E: +400
How They Advanced:
There was no place like home for Ecuador in qualifying, but they could not win on the road. Still, they came in fourth in the tough South American qualifying process and even played to a 1-1 draw against Argentina and beat Chile, who are both teams playing in Brazil.
In CONMEBOL they did have 25 points, but their home crowd seemed to push them through in rough patches and they will not have that in Brazil. Still, they bested some good teams and they have to be happy after not qualifying for South Africa in 2010.
Not an easy call with Ecuador playing on their home continent, but that will not help them much. They will lose their first match against Switzerland with the great Swiss midfield and while they will beat Honduras they will not do so against France. The European clubs will get the best of them this summer and Ecuador will not be making it to the round of 16 like they did in their last World Cup showing in 2006.
