Ghana Flying Under World Cup Odds Radar

The Group of Death always gets a lot of press, but even though that is the case Ghana us flying under the radar. Germany and Portugal are the two teams in the groups expected to progress with many thinking the Americans have a shot. However, Ghana is a solid squad that narrowly missed out on becoming the first African team in the World Cup semifinals after losing to Uruguay in 2010 in the quarters.

Since betting odds have been posted Ghana has slipped in the group betting now last in the group at +1200 with the USA at +1100, Portugal at +275, and Germany the favorite to win the group at -200.

Overall Ghana has World Cup betting odds of +25000 at Bet365.

Ghana has some world-class players with the likes of Asamoah Gyan, Michael Essien, and Kevin-Prince Boateng. The return of Essien is big for the squad that missed him in the 2010 World Cup due to injuries. As a whole Ghana has the power and the pace to give others in the groups problems.

In their opening match they face the USA, which may be their most important one of the group and the one they have a great shot to get three points. They match up well with the Americans with their pace and history is on their side after ousting the USA in the last two World Cup tournaments.

Even though Ghana now has the worst odds to win the Group of Death they are the slight World Cup betting favorites in the opening match against the USA at +150 with the Americans at +188 and a draw line of +220.

Ghana faces Germany in their second match and they are HUGE betting underdogs posted at +750 with Germany at -275 and a draw line of +375. However, Ghana may match up better with Germany than their last match, which does not have odds posted yet, facing Portugal since they have a strong midfield, but defense is the weakness. If Ghana can play well against the stacked German midfield they have a chance and a draw in that match would suit the African nation fine.

I mentioned defense is the issue for Ghana and facing Cristiano Ronaldo in the Portugal match is not to their liking. They have struggled against attacking squads, which Portugal is and their midfield may have to drop back on the pitch to thwart the offensive.

Overall, Ghana is not getting much love from the odds makers, but they have made it to the round of 16 in the last two World Cups and it would not be a shock if they did it this summer in Brazil.
