Ghana - Odds to Win 2014 FIFA World Cup

This is Ghana’s third straight World Cup appearance making the last 16 in 2006 and the quarterfinals in 2010. However, getting that far in 2014 will be a very tall task since they were drawn into the dreaded Group of death with Germany, Portugal, and the United States.
Ghana has a great midfield with the likes of Kevin-Prince Boateng, Kwadwo Asamoah, Sulley Muntari and Michael Essien, but the defense is a major concern. That concern was only highlighted when the draw came out having to face Germany and Cristiano Ronaldo and Portugal. Still, there is a lot of talent on the squad and they knocked the United States out of the round of 16 in the last World Cup in South Africa.

How They Advanced:
Ghana qualified by coming in first in African qualifying Group D and then beating Egypt in the mandatory play-off 7-3 on aggregate. They had won 5 straight qualifying matches before their last loss on the road to Egypt. However, in the previous match against Egypt at home in the first leg of the playoff they won 6-1.
In 10 matches in qualifying Ghana’s offense was solid, including three matches scoring at least four goals, but they only had clean sheets in two matches.
Early Prediction:
The Ghanaian FA has set a target for coach Kwesi Appiah of reaching the semifinals after the last two solid World Cup showings. However, that will not come close to happening. Their defense will have trouble with Germany and Portugal and the United States will avenge their loss in the round of 16 of the 2010 World Cup and beat Ghana. They may come out of this Group of Death with a draw against Portugal, but they will still finish winless and at the bottom of the group.
