Group D Betting Odds
Group D is a tough one where there are three teams that have pretty even odds. Top pot seed Uruguay and Italy have odds of +163 with England at +225.
Costa Rica has long shot odds to win the group and they also have the worst odds out of all the 32 teams to win the World Cup. Uruguay is the top seed in the group even through they finished fifth in the South American qualifying process and had to beat Jordan in an intercontinental playoff to make it to Brazil.
Here are the teams in Group D and their odds to win (live updates at Bodog) and see Group D prop betting lines at the bottom of the page:
Italy won the World Cup in 2006 and still has many key veterans from that team such as GK Gianluigi Buffon and MF Andrea Pirlo both from Juventus. The Azzurri have no glaring weaknesses and their midfield and defense are superb. In European qualifying they did not lose a single match.
Italy’s defense may give the attacking Uruguay squad big problems in what may THE match of the group. The squad has pressure on them after not advancing out of the group stage in South Africa.
Uruguay had a far from easy time qualifying for Brazil, but they have a great attacking squad led by the world-class players of Edinson Cavani and Luis Suarez. In 1950 the last time the World Cup was held in Brazil Uruguay won the title. Suarez has odds of +1600 to win the Golden Boot.
The offense for Uruguay is great, but the same cannot be said for the midfield and especially the defense. The team was 3-2-1 in qualifying facing teams playing in the World Cup.
Can the Four Lions break their World Cup slump? They have not advanced past the quarterfinals since they won it all way back in 1966. In the last few World Cups England has beaten the teams they should and have struggled against top tier ones.
Forwards Wayne Rooney and Daniel Sturridge lead a solid offense and Steven Gerrard will, once again, be the anchor of the midfield. There has not been a great English goalkeeper in a long while and that is the weakness of the squad, which may hurt them in the Uruguay and Italy matches. Rooney is a great world-class striker, but only has odds of +5000 to win the Golden Boot.
Costa Rica +2000
Costa Rica has major long shot odds to win Group D and with good reason. They are not good at the possession game in the midfield and that will really be an issue facing Italy and England. Costa Rica does have a solid defense, but can they score?
In the qualifying process playing 10 matches Costa Rica scored more than one goal in only three of them. Fulham’s FW Bryan Ruiz is the key striker on the squad and while he can be a great player he goes through spells is being ineffective.
