Iran - Odds to Win 2014 FIFA World Cup

This is the fourth trip to the World Cup for Iran and they have never made it out of the group stage. They play a defensive scheme where their best chances to score come on the counter-attack. They are well coached by Carlos Queiroz, but they are not a physical bunch and the depth of their squad is a major concern.

Iran is the long shots to make it out of the group and while beating Argentina simply will not happen Iran has a chance against Bosnia-Herzegovina and Nigeria with their solid defense. Iran is one of the lowest ranked FIFA team in the World Cup.

How They Advanced:

Iran had had a very favorable draw in the third round in the Asia qualifying and finished first in the group ahead of South Korea and Uzbekistan. Their biggest matches were facing South Korea and they won the home and away legs each by a score of 1-0. Their defense did not give up a goal in their last three qualifying matches, but their offense, which is a concern in Brazil, only scored more than one goal in one of their last eight matches.

Early Prediction:

While Argentina is a tough draw both Bosnia-Herzegovina and Nigeria are beatable. However, Iran will not beat either, as they will finish last in the group and I would be surprised if they scored. In qualifying their two big 1-0 wins over Korea were solid, but facing top tier clubs, or somewhat top tier ones, the Iranians will struggle big time.
