Italy Longshots in 2014 World Cup Odds

Besides this summer’s host in Brazil, Italy has won the most World Cups, but they are not getting much of a betting shot for this World Cup.

There are eight other countries that have better betting odds than Italy, who are posted at +2800.

However, they are one of the more experienced squads in the tournament with several players that were on their 2006 World Cup winning team.

Italy is in one of the tougher groups playing in Group D with Uruguay, England, and Costa Rica. Italy and Uruguay have the same betting odds to win the group at +163 with England at +225 and Costa Rica at +5000.

Obviously their two biggest matches of the group come against Uruguay and England.

Italy breezed through World Cup qualifying and in their most recent friendly they lost 1-0 to 2010 WC champions Spain. The veterans of Gianluigi Buffon, Andrea Pirlo, Daniele De Rossi and Giorgio Chiellini are still the core of the Azzurri and there is a lot of pressure on Mario Balotelli.

He will be counted on to carry the offense. In the five World Cup qualifiers in which Balotelli played he scored five goals.

Andrea Pirlo is no spring chicken, but he is still one of the best midfielders in the world and has shown that with his play this season for Juventus. However, this season while he has played well he has also had some injury concerns and if he cannot go in Brazil it would be a HUGE blow.

For Italy to win the tournament this summer Pirlo and Daniele De Rossi will have to play well in the midfield both playing defense and initiating the offensive attack.

Gianluigi Buffon is still the anchor of the defense and the Juventus G was the hero of the 2006 World Cup when the Italians won their fourth trophy. He and the defense will have to play well, especially when facing offensive minded squads like Uruguay.

The Azzurri are looking for a good showing this summer after their disastrous 2010 World Cup when they failed to get out of their group with two draws and one loss.

Italy is flying under the World Cup betting radar this summer, which is different from the past. They have the talent and the veteran leadership, which they will have to take advantage of in Brazil.
