Uruguay - Odds to Win 2014 FIFA World Cup
Uruguay has a little history on their side and while a top pod seed they are in a tough group and had a far from easy time qualifying. The last time the World Cup was in Brazil Uruguay won it all. However, that was way back in 1950 and while they are tied with Italy for having the best odds to win their group they also have England and Costa Rica to deal with.
With the likes of Edinson Cavani, Luis Suarez, and veteran Deigo Forlan up front the offense is not the issue, but the midfield is not a great one and the defense is also a concern.
Uruguay Odds to win World Cup 2014: +2500
Uruguay Odds to win Group D: +163
How They Advanced:
Not easily. Uruguay is a top pod seed in Brazil, but they needed an intercontinental playoff to get there. Finishing fifth in South American qualifying they had to win a playoff to book their ticket to Brazil, but had no problems beating Jordan 5-0 on aggregate.
After a terrible start to qualifying going winless in their first five matches they finished well winning four of their last five. Facing teams that are playing in Brazil Uruguay had three losses, two wins, and one draw.
Uruguay is tied with Italy for having the best odds to win the group and even though they are playing on their home soil they will not advance. While they will have no problems beating Costa Rica in their opening match they will facing England and Italy in their following two matches. Italy and England are both strong in the midfield and that will be the downfall of Uruguay, who will not advance out of the group stage.
